The Coffeehouse Experience: Part 5 & Another Update

The search for a writing spot continues. I must admit that I’m having a bit of fun with this hunt and am happy to be able to support so many local businesses. This week, I took a little trip outside of town to visit a coffeeshop I stopped at briefly several months ago.

The place is The Cracked Pot Coffee Shop located in Mechanicsburg, PA. The coffeeshop is a huge, stately house and is a nonprofit devoted to helping teenagers who are aging out of the foster system by providing jobs, life skills guidance and mentorship. I love enterprises that have dual missions like this.

I chose a day in which the place was relatively full – Tuesday morning. However, I was able to find a quieter section of the café that was set apart from the main seating area. It has a home office feel to it and I felt myself immediately relax. Cracked Pot has plenty of seating indoors as well as a few spots outside. Had it been a nicer day when I was there, I would’ve sat outside.

Pros of this place: 1. Great chai latte served in a huge mug, upping the homeyness quotient 2. Free wi-fi 3. Uplifting background music 4. Plenty of light from the floor to ceiling windows 5. Friendly staff 6. Relatively quiet place in which to write (HUGE PLUS) 7. Plenty of parking

Cons: 1. Can be very noisy so be mindful as to when you go and where you sit. I recommend sitting in the alcove to the right of the front door, or you can sit outside on the porch or back patio.

My Writerly Grade: A

**

Thanks to my ability to find great coffeeshops, I’ve made progress on my book. I’m learning that while working at home has been very convenient, it’s not the best place for me to write. There are way too many distractions for me to get any solid writing done. Maybe I’ll change my mind when I have fewer people living here (my college kid returns in about two months, and the other kids who live here may be moving out soon).

Aside from the current work in progress, I’ve started thinking about what’s next. Right now, I’m toying with the idea of starting another podcast. I produce a podcast currently on grief for my therapy practice (check out “This Thing Called Grief” on most major platforms) and because I enjoy that so much, I’m considering doing one devoted to writing.

I’m also tossing around the idea of writing a novel, a memoir or another nonfiction work. A lot to consider over the next few months. But, I’m in no rush to decide because I will also be very busy promoting my second book scheduled to be released late this year.

If there’s a writing project you’d like for me to consider, send me an email – lori@loriapeterswriter.com.
